While most people think of Russia and the United States as being separated by a vast ocean, they are only about 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles) apart at their closest point in the Bering Strait. This gap is bridged by two small islands: Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (USA). During the depths of winter, the seawater between these two islands can freeze into a solid ice bridge. While the crossing is treacherous due to shifting ice floes, extreme winds, and temperatures that can plummet below -40°C, it is physically possible to walk from one country to the other on foot. However, just because it is physically possible doesn't mean it is legally or practically simple. Beyond the life-threatening weather, the stretch of water between the islands also contains the International Date Line. This means that if you walked from the American Little Diomede to the Russian Big Diomede, you would literally be "walking into tomorrow," as the time difference is 21 hours.
